Overview
MISSION:
Respond to world health care needs, specifically within surgical fields, through clinical care, research, and education

Duke Global Surgery

For years, Duke surgeons, nurses, and staff members within the Department of Surgery have dedicated their time and energy to address health disparities around the globe. Countless volunteer hours are spent by these individuals before they embark on a mission by securing donations, equipment, and supplies for trips to foreign countries in need. Today, Duke Global Surgery provides a centralized approach to the global health problems that many surgeons have personally undertaken in their volunteer work. Through a partnership with the Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI), this program enables Duke Surgery faculty members to respond to world health care needs, specifically within surgical fields, through clinical care, research, and education.

While abroad, the teams of dedicated health care leaders serve as quintessential ambassadors for Duke Medicine by spreading the clinical expertise for which Duke is world-renowned. Their work helps further the mission of the DHGI, by helping to ensure medical care reaches people in underserved and under-resourced areas around the world. Whether providing direct patient care with innovative technologies, educating health care providers in the developing world, or discovering ground breaking research, Duke Global Surgery team members make everyone on the home front at Duke proud.

With the financial support of the Department of Surgery, the Duke Global Surgery Committee grants up to five proposals annually. Faculty members within the Duke Department of Surgery may apply for these grants.  A grant application can be obtained by contacting Dr. Haglund.   All applications are reviewed by the Duke Global Surgery Committee, and final approval for the grant is determined by Danny O. Jacobs, MD, MPH, David C. Sabiston, Jr. Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery.
